Buff sandstone slab with natural layered grain

Sandstone in Ahmedabad Warm, natural sandstone

Rajasthan sandstone for façades, terraces, paving and landscapes — in natural, honed, sandblasted and textured finishes.

Sandstone for Gujarat’s climate

Sandstone is a sedimentary stone made of sand grains cemented together over time. Its warm, earthy colours — buff, beige, yellow, pink, red and grey — and its naturally textured surface make it one of India’s favourite stones for exteriors. Rajasthan is the country’s main source, and through our Makrana base we work closely with the region’s quarries.

In Ahmedabad’s hot, bright climate, lighter sandstones stay cooler underfoot than many alternatives, and textured finishes give good grip around pools, terraces and steps. Used on façades and compound walls, sandstone ages gracefully and blends with landscaping.

Popular uses

  • Façade and elevation cladding for bungalows, farmhouses and institutional buildings.
  • Paving for driveways, pathways, courtyards and pool decks.
  • Boundary and compound walls in natural split or rock-face finish.
  • Landscape features — steps, planters, benches and water features.

Colours

Sandstone colours and how to use them

Sandstone colour comes from the minerals that cement its grains. Iron oxides give the familiar pinks and reds; lighter cements give buffs, beiges and creams; some quarries produce greys, greens and multi-coloured “rainbow” stones with swirling bands. Each suits a different architectural mood.

  • Buff and beige — calm, contemporary and cool underfoot; the most popular choice for Ahmedabad elevations and pool decks.
  • Pink and red — the classic Rajasthan palette of forts and havelis; ideal for traditional and heritage-style homes, temples and institutional buildings.
  • Grey — modern and understated; pairs well with exposed concrete, glass and black metal.
  • Multi-colour — strong natural banding for feature walls and landscape accents.

Because sandstone is a natural material, colour varies from lot to lot. For a façade or a large paved area, order the full quantity from one lot and lay out a few pieces before installation to blend tones evenly.

Thickness and sizes

Paving is usually 25–40 mm for pedestrian areas and 40–50 mm or more for driveways, laid on a well-compacted base. Cladding is typically 18–25 mm, fixed with suitable adhesive and, for upper floors, mechanical anchors. We can supply calibrated sizes for a clean modern grid, or random sizes for a natural, rustic pattern.

Finishes

Choosing a sandstone finish

  • Natural (cleft) — the split face of the stone; rustic texture and excellent grip.
  • Honed / sawn — smooth and even; good for contemporary elevations and covered areas.
  • Sandblasted — lightly textured, uniform surface for paving and steps.
  • Tumbled — softened edges for a weathered, heritage look.

Price & care

Price factors and maintenance

Sandstone is priced by colour and quarry, thickness, size (random vs calibrated) and finish, plus installation. Because it is porous, we recommend a breathable sealer outdoors to reduce staining and algae, and periodic washing with water and a soft brush. Avoid acid-based cleaners.

Good to know

Sandstone questions

Is sandstone good for outdoor flooring?

Yes. Textured sandstone gives good slip resistance and lighter colours stay relatively cool in the sun. Seal it to reduce staining.

Which sandstone is best for a house elevation?

It depends on the design: buff and beige suit contemporary elevations, pink and red suit traditional ones. We can show samples in daylight.

Does sandstone fade?

Good quality sandstone is colour-stable, though all natural stone mellows slightly with weathering.
