Black Galaxy granite in Ahmedabad Black Galaxy, a night sky in stone
Deep black granite scattered with golden-bronze flecks — India’s most recognisable granite for kitchens, stairs and floors.
About Black Galaxy granite
Black Galaxy is quarried in Andhra Pradesh, in South India. Its black ground is studded with small golden, copper or bronze flecks (crystals of the mineral enstatite) that glitter like stars when polished — hence the name. It is one of the most exported Indian granites and a staple of kitchens across Gujarat.
The stone is dense and hard, resists heat and scratches and absorbs very little water, so it is easy to live with in a busy Indian kitchen. The fine, even flecks also help hide crumbs and water spots between wipes.
Best uses
- Kitchen countertops and islands — the most popular use.
- Staircases and lobby floors with polished or leather finishes.
- Bathroom vanities and bar counters.
- Borders and inlays against lighter marble floors.
Choosing a good Black Galaxy slab
Quality varies by the density and size of the flecks and the depth of the black. Look for an even distribution of fine flecks and a consistent ground without large white or grey patches. Ask to see the full slab and, for kitchens, plan cut-outs so that joints fall in natural places. Our guide on choosing granite for kitchen countertops covers thickness, edges and finishes.
